Would Obama's jobs plan really prevent a recession? (The Week)

New York ? Economists surveyed by Bloomberg think so. Is that enough reason for Congress to pass Obama's bill?

It's famously hard to get a group of economists to agree on anything, and that holds true when it comes to the projected impact of President Obama's $447 billion American Jobs Act. In a new Bloomberg survey, economists from 28 financial firms said the bill, if passed, would create or save anywhere from zero to 2 million jobs, and add between zero and 2 percent to next year's gross domestic product. On average, though, the economists predicted Obama's jobs bill will would boost employment by 275,000 jobs next year and add 0.6 percent to GDP, staving off another recession. Should Congress pass the bill?

What more incentive does Congress need? Support for Obama's jobs plan is clearly "stronger among economists than members of Congress," says Steve Benen in Washington Monthly. But who are you going to trust? Republicans, whose icy austerity would "quickly push the economy backwards" or "knowledgeable experts who get paid to answer these questions correctly," and who collectively agree that Obama's policies would keep the economy growing?

Obama's jobs plan isn't worth the cost: Let's be generous and give Obama those 275,000 jobs, plus another 13,000 in 2013, says Andrew Stiles in National Review. And even if you think it is, "at this point, almost three years into the Obama presidency, when even Democrats admit they own the economy, isn't avoiding another recession a pretty low bar?"

Congress needs to do something, now: If Republicans won't pass Obama's plan to jump-start the teetering economy and hiring, says the San Jose Mercury News in an editorial, they need to produce an alternative that gets at least similar support from economists, stat. "As we barrel toward a double-dip recession, 14 million unemployed Americans and millions more at risk of losing their jobs would appreciate it if Congress did something ? anything ? to help right now."

Congo militants release boat with 100 aboard (AP)

KINSHASA, Congo ? An official in eastern Congo says militants have released a boat and about 100 hostages aboard.

Victor Chomachoma said Tuesday that the vessel was freed after a ransom was paid to the militants.

It was not immediately known how much money was paid, though other officials said the militants only took equipment from the boat.

Armed fighters seized the vessel carrying military families Sunday on Lake Tanganyika near the border with Burundi and Tanzania.

Chomachoma said a Congolese militia group known as the Mai-Mai was blamed for a similar attack earlier this month.

Eastern Congo remains mired in fighting after back-to-back civil wars ravaged the Central African group. The region is home to a myriad of armed groups who kidnap and terrorize civilians.

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) ? Signed, sealed and delivered, the first Boeing 787 took off from Everett, Wash., on Tuesday in the hands of launch customer All Nippon Airways.

Ramp workers cheered the takeoff at 7:15 a.m., which was about 45 minutes later than expected. The plane climbed into an overcast sky, tipped its wings and headed west to Japan.

Boeing officials handed over a ceremonial key to airline executives Monday, after a three-year delay in bringing the new wide-body jetliner to market. The plane goes into service in November in Japan.

Chicago-based Boeing says a weight savings from a high-tech plastic skin will save airlines fuel while passengers enjoy features such as bigger windows and luggage bins.

Airlines have ordered more than 800 of the planes that will compete with the Airbus A350.

By March, Boeing is to deliver 12 of the 787s to ANA, which is to receive all of the 55 planes it ordered by the end of 2017. The planes are assembled at Boeing's wide-body factory in Everett and also a new plant Boeing opened in Charleston, S.C.

The new jet is the first commercial airliner built using carbon fiber ? a strong, lightweight, high-tech plastic ? rather than the typical aluminum skin.

The use of carbon fiber allowed for several other breakthroughs, including larger windows with electronic dimming rather than shades, and pressurization that's more akin to what passengers feel at ground level. Without corrosion-prone aluminum, cabin humidity levels can be set higher, easing dry noses and throats. The lighter jet will be quieter and use about 20 percent less fuel than a comparably sized aluminum aircraft.

At Monday's ceremony, aviation industry analyst Peter Clark, who traveled from Auckland, New Zealand, called the 787's delivery one of the four major events in the history of commercial aviation, after the development of the Boeing 707, the 747 and Concorde.

WHO: Iran, South Asia worst for city air pollution (AP)

GENEVA ? Cities in Iran, India, Pakistan and the capital of Mongolia rank among the worst on the planet for air pollution, while those in the U.S. and Canada are among the best, according to the first global survey released Monday by the World Health Organization.

The southwest Iranian city of Ahvaz walked away with the unfortunate distinction of having the highest measured level of airborne particles smaller than 10 micrometers.

WHO released the list to highlight the need to reduce outdoor air pollution, which is estimated to cause 1.34 million premature deaths each year. The global body said investments to lower pollution levels quickly pay off due to lower disease rates and, therefore, lower healthcare costs.

The list, which relies on country-reported data over the past several years, measures the levels of airborne particles smaller than 10 micrometers ? so-called PM10s ? for almost 1,100 cities.

WHO recommends an upper limit of 20 micrograms for PM10s, which can cause serious respiratory problems in humans. They are mostly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide from power plants, auto exhausts and industry.

Ahvaz's annual average of PM10s was 372 micrograms per cubic meter. Heavy industry and low-quality vehicle fuel are the main causes of air pollution in this desert city of 1.3 million.

The study found that the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator had an annual average PM10s density of 279 micrograms per cubic meter, followed by another west Iranian city, Sanandaj, with 254 micrograms.

Cities in Pakistan and India, such as Quetta and Kanpur, as well as Botswana's capital Gaborone, also ranked high on the pollution scale.

Mohammad Hasan, 39, of Karachi, Pakistan, said attempts to improve air quality in the port city of 18 million ? such as by replacing heavily polluting buses with vehicles using compressed natural gas ? are being undermined by bigger polluters who are "playing havoc with the lives of Karachi populace."

"Industries and factories are emitting thick clouds of smoke, and no government agency is out there to check them or correct them," the bank employee said.

WHO said the reasons for high pollution levels varied, but that often rapid industrialization and the use of poor quality fuels for transportation and electricity generation are to blame.

In India, major metropolitan areas such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata have banned the construction of new power plants within city limits, and existing ones are being shut down or relocated.

But at the same time, a lack of public transport has led to an explosion of privately owned cars and SUVs as the economy booms, with the number of heavily polluting diesel vehicles increasing 10-fold as diesel is highly subsidized by the government.

At the other end of the list are cities in Canada and the United States, which benefit from lower population density, favorable climates and stricter air pollution regulation.

Yukon territory's capital Whitehorse had a yearly average of just 3 micrograms of PM10s per cubic meter, while Santa Fe, New Mexico, measured 6 micrograms.

"It's absolutely wonderful," said Whitehorse Mayor Bev Buckway. "A lot of people come up north and they smell the air and the say "'Oh wow. Amazing. The air smells so good,'" she said. "And we tend to take it for granted because we just have that all the time."

Santa Fe Mayor David Coss said Monday that he's pleased but not surprised as the city consistently gets high rankings from the American Lung Association.

He said the clean air is one of the things he loves about living in Santa Fe.

Washington, D.C., had a level of 18 micrograms, Tokyo measured 23 micrograms, and Paris had 38 micrograms of PM10s per cubic meter.

WHO also released a shorter table comparing levels of even finer dust particles, known as PM2.5s. The level considered harmful there is 10 micrograms per cubic meter.

This list contained no measurements from Asia apart from Ulan Bator, which again ranked worst with 63.0 micrograms.

BMI is a measure of your weight with consideration of your height. This equation works well for the average population. However, it usually doesn?t work well for athletes or other people with a large muscle mass. If you fall into that category, your BMI reading may be falsely high because of all that wonderful muscle!

BMI = [Weight in Pounds / (height in inches x height in inches) ] x 703

Example of a woman who weighs 145# and is 69?: (145 / 4761) x 703 = 21.4

A healthy BMI is between 18.5-24.9.

This is a really important measurement to check. Researchers found that fat around the waist is even MORE active at releasing the hormones and proteins described above.

Use both methods to see how your measurements match up. If your numbers are high, try not to worry too much. Let it be motivation to get you moving in the right direction.

Suicide bomb attack at Indonesia church injures 20

JAKARTA, Indonesia?? A suicide bomber attacked an Indonesian church packed with hundreds of worshippers Sunday, killing himself and wounding at least 20 other people, police and hospital officials said.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the bombing.

Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim nation of 237 million, has been hit by a string of suicide bombings blamed on the al-Qaida-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah and its offshoots since 2002, when a strike on two Bali nightclubs killed 202 people, most of them foreign tourists.

Subsequent attacks have been far less deadly, however, and the last occurred more than two years ago, owing to a security crackdown that led to the arrests and convictions of hundreds of Islamic militants.

Bombings by solo "jihadis" have continued, however, often targeting Christians, security officers and members of Islamic sects deemed "blasphemous" by hard-liners.

"This is clearly a suicide bombing," said police spokesman Col. Djihartono, adding that the explosive appeared to have been strapped to the bomber's stomach.

It was packed with nails, nuts and bolts, found scattered around his body.

Around 20 other people were wounded, one critically, said Bambang Sumarsono, a hospital official.

Witnesses said they believed the perpetrator was not a church member.

First African woman to win Nobel Peace Prize dies

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Wangari Maathai, the first African woman recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died after a long struggle with cancer, the environmental organization she founded said Monday. She was 71.

One of Kenya's most recognizable women, Maathai won her Nobel in 2004 for combining science and social activism. She was the founder of the Green Belt Movement, where over 30 years she mobilized poor women to plant 30 million trees.

Edward Wageni, that group's deputy executive director, said Maathai died in a Nairobi hospital late Sunday night. Maathai was in and out of the hospital since the beginning of the year, he said.

Previous years? subjects have included ?Bringing Motion to Life? and ?Smart Moves for Families?. It?s a great way for the profession to bring attention to physical therapy related healthcare topics that are currently in the news or are having a major impact on the well-being of American society.

Physical Therapist Assistants Help Prevent Injuries

This year?s topic deals with helping to prevent sports injuries for all ages. As part of the national move to promote health and fitness, combat obesity, develop cardiovascular endurance, and generally enhance wellness for children as well as adults, healthcare professionals and government agencies encourage participation in sport as a healthy physical activity with an important social dimension. APTA is using this month-long event to draw attention to how physical therapist assistants and their supervising PTs can help people to prevent sports related injuries and recover mobility from those that exist.

It?s clear that an understanding of how to do sports safely can help to decrease the risk of being injured. Whether on the football field, the gymnasium, or in the weights room, a better familiarity with good technique and safety precautions can help people prevent injuries that can seriously impede their ability to perform to their full potential in many other areas of life, and avoid expensive series of treatments.

Prevention As Well As Cure In Physical Therapy

It is sometimes thought that a physical therapist or a physical therapy assistant is really only concerned with helping patients recover from accidents and injuries. But an important part of their role is also to help prevent injuries which might otherwise occur. In this respect, physical therapist assistants have an essential part to play in their team in delivering programs that educate the general public in wellness programs with a foundation in exercising safely.

As the population gets older and the baby boomer generation contributes to the increased number of retirees, PTAs are helping their physical therapists to deliver plans of care efficiently, administering many of the hands-on elements of treatment according to the program that the physical therapist has devised. As their manager, the PT sets out the direction of treatment, and delegates a significant part of its provision to the physical therapy assistant.

Important Skills For Physical Therapist Assistants

That?s why a PTA needs such good communication skills: their job includes motivating and instructing patients as they undertake their course of therapy, observing them as they progress and making notes and records, talking to family members and caregivers about how to support the treatment program, and conferring with the supervising PT and other members of the team to coordinate care and evaluate patient status on an ongoing basis.

As part of their education on a physical therapy assistants? program, students are expected to show proficiency in written and spoken English, reading comprehension, active listening skills, perceptiveness in regards to the reaction of patients, and critical thinking ? all of these, elements of teaching and counseling techniques which can be used for injury prevention as well as part of therapeutic treatment.

An important part of physical therapy is to promote a healthy lifestyle.
