Student Builds Portable Washer So His Mom Can Do His Laundry Anywhere

Student Builds Portable Washer So His Mom Can Do His Laundry Anywhere

They say necessity is the mother of invention, but laziness has probably inspired many a wonderful creation too. After his roommate complained about having to hand wash all of his clothing, Pu Qingliang, a 21-year-old mechanical design and manufacturing student, put the skills he learned to good use by designing a collapsible, portable automatic washing machine.

Weighing in at just under seven pounds, the washing machine features a watertight folding tube and a rotating agitator in the base that's able to wash up to five large garments at one time. Not exactly enough capacity for an entire week's load, but great for dealing with stains and spills no matter where you are.

Pu has already patented his design, but lacks the giant industrial complex needed to turn it into a consumer-ready product. So thankfully Haier, one of the world's largest appliance makers, has already reached out to Pu about his design, which hopefully means that one day waiting for a free machine at the laundromat will be a thing of the past.
