California's school chief Tom Torlakson said Monday he believes public schools in California are safe, but he wants to make sure schools are reviewing their security plans to learn from the tragedy in Connecticut last Friday?that claimed the lives of 20 children and six educators.
"So we are asking California administrators and principals to just carefully review their plans again and look at the best practices we can share," Torlakson told KCRA 3.
That message was reinforced at schools across California, including O.W. Erlewine in Sacramento, where the state flag was flying at half-staff.
"The one thing we've reminded our schools is keep your doors locked," said Jonathan Raymond, superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District.?"This is everyone's responsibility. So keep an eye out for our kids and our schools."
It's a warning that was resonating with parents, as well.
"Right now it feels safe," said Jali Johnson, father of a third-grader at Erlewine Elementary School.
"But things are just happening all over so I don't know how to explain that one. That Friday we definitely sat down and talked to them, me and the mother. We explained to her she has to be aware all the time, no matter what."
Stan Williams told KCRA 3 he had given his son Ahmad, a kindergartner, instructions on what to do if something bad happened at school.
"Listen to your instructors," Williams said. "Always be aware. If they say time to line up, line up."
Teachers were also having a hard time coping with the Connecticut school shooting tragedy.
