Hines Promotes 3 in San Francisco Office

Hines, an international real estate investment, development and investment firm, promoted three executives in its west regional office in San Francisco.
George Clever (pictured far left) was named senior managing director. He joined Hines in 1995 as an assistant project manager. Clever later relocated to San Francisco and served as a project manager. Currently, he shares responsibility for Hines? new business activities in Northern California.
Cameron Falconer (middle) was appointed senior managing director. He joined Hines in Los Angeles in 1997. The following year, he relocated to San Francisco as a project manager. Currently, he shares responsibility for Hines? new business activities in Northern California.
Paul Brenner (end) was promoted to vice president--controller. He joined Hines in 1998 as a controller, and was promoted to senior controller in 2006. Since then, he has shared responsibility for all property finance and accounting matters, including all real estate operations and development activity totaling 27 million square feet in the firm?s west region.

Related Cos. Selects Blau as CEO

New York-based development firm Related Cos. appointed Jeff Blau (pictured) as chief executive officer. Blau has been with the company since 1990 and served as its president for the last 12 years. As CEO he will control overall management of the firm.
Blau succeeds founder Stephen Ross who will continue his duties as executive chairman. Ross will focus on global business strategy and development and oversee the execution of Hudson Yards, a 13 million-square-foot project.
Related also promoted Bruce Beal Jr. to president and Kenneth Wong as chief operating officer and director of international development. Beal joined the firm in 1995 and formerly served as executive vice president. Wong returned to Related in 2008 and most recently served as vice chairman. He has more than 30 years of commercial real estate experience and has represented more than $20 billion worth of assets.

Latessa To Oversee CBRE's OH Operations

CBRE Inc. promoted John Latessa to senior managing director of its Ohio operations. He will assume responsibility for the Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati markets, along with increased executive management responsibilities.
Latessa joined CBRE in 2008 as the managing director of the Detroit office, where he oversaw 500 professionals.
?John is a strong and highly regarded leader who has built on CBRE?s market leadership position in Detroit over the past five years,? said Mike Gerard, CBRE?s central division president. ?He has demonstrated deep knowledge of our multi-faceted client services platform and the comprehensive, valued-added solutions CBRE can deliver for investor and occupier clients. NGKF Expands South Florida Capital Group

Newmark Grubb Knight Frank?s Capital Group added a team of investment sales and debt placement professionals in its Miami office.
Joining the firm are Adam L. Greenberg CCIM and Michael Lapointe CFA as executive managing directors, and Michael Noll AIA as an associate.
Prior to joining NGKF, Greenberg and Lapointe held senior positions with the BayBridge companies based in Florida. Formerly a managing director with BayBridge, Greenberg has specialized in the brokerage of entitled and un-entitled development opportunities, condominium conversions, office, retail and portfolio sales. In his capital advisory role, he has also represented clients with senior, mezzanine and equity capital placement. Lapointe is former president of the BayBridge companies, has been involved in over $400 million in financing and brokerage transactions in the state.
Noll previously served as the principal of an architecture and construction consulting firm, M3 Design + Development, for the previous seven years, along with holding a position at BayBridge.

Anderson, Ivie Join JLL in San Francisco

Jones Lang LaSalle deepened its brokerage team in San Francisco, landing a pair of experienced real estate dealmakers formerly with The CAC Group. Steve Anderson, a former principal with CAC, was named managing director, and Bryan Ivie was appointed vice president.
Considered one of the most productive brokerage teams in San Francisco over the past five years, Anderson and Ivie represent a number of high-profile tenants and landlords. The new hires were announced by Elizabeth Hearle, JLL's Pacific Northwest market director.
Anderson has completed more than 5.5 million square feet of office lease transactions in San Francisco throughout his career and participated in investment sales valued at more than $550 million. Ivie is also an accomplished broker with experience in both tenant rep and agency leasing business. A former Olympian, Ivie competed in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Games as a volleyball player.

Retail specialist Lorraine Adney joined the Chicago office of Robert K. Futterman & Associates as vice president. Adney has extensive experience in local, national and international representation for both retailers and owners.
She previously served as the director of the Midwestern division at The McDevitt Co. where she assisted national and international brands in retail networks in the U.S. and Europe. Adney has worked with brands such as Marc Jacobs, Urban Outfitters Anthropologie, L'Occitane en Provence and Eileen Fisher.
RKF is an independent real estate firm specializing in retail leasing, investment sales and consulting services. In May, RKF opened its Chicago office as part of its expansion into key urban markets nationwide. This is the New York-based firm's seventh office.

Jones Lang LaSalle Adds 2 Retail Brokers

Jones Lang LaSalle expanded its retail initiative with the hiring of David Thomas (pictured far left) in downtown Los Angeles and Bryan Cunningham (left) in San Diego. The new vice presidents will work in retail brokerage as JLL continues to increase its focus and resources on retail tenant solutions (RTS) to provide tenant representation in additional to its traditional focus on landlord representation.
Thomas' previous position was as a senior vice president at a major retail real estate firm where he worked with landlords and tenants on lease negotiations, business plans, market research and strategic analysis. During his career, he has led leasing efforts for more than 4 million square feet of new developments with a total value of $600 million. Thomas is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
Since January 2010, Cunningham has completed more than 150 transactions, with a combined total consideration of approximately $100 million. CoStar named him a Power Broker in 2010 and 2011.

CBRE Taps Milonas as VP

Jon Milonas was promoted from senior associate to vice president within CBRE's Office Occupier Group. He is the youngest broker to be promoted to vice president in the occupier group within the past five years.
Milonas represents office tenants, providing strategic consulting, process management and negotiation services. His clients include Morningstar, McGraw-Hill Cos. and Northwestern Mutual.
He has closed 75 real estate transactions resulting in a total transaction volume of more than $152 million.

London named fashion capital of the world
The Duchess of Cambridge and the Olympics have contributed to London being named the fashion capital of the world, beating off stiff competition from New York and Paris.

London has been named global fashion capital of the world for the second consecutive year.
The annual list, which is put together by media analytics company Global Language Monitor, is compiled by analysing the Internet, blogosphere, and the top 175,000 print and electronic global media and as well as other sources to see which cities garner the most interest and coverage. New York placed second on the list, followed by Paris, Madrid and Barcelona. Although Paris is places third on the list, it is ranked at number one for Haute Couture. Surprisingly, Milan, one of the four main Fashion Week hosts, came in eighth.

Paul Payack, the president of the GLM, said that both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Olympics have helped London retain the title for a second year. "The second thing is the Olympics being in the UK."
In 2011 London overtook New York, who had maintained the premiere position for several years, for the first time. The Duchess and interest in Alexander McQueen following his death were named as the main reasons for the England capital's surge in fashion popularity.

Egypt president to Syria's Assad: Step down before it's too late
CAIRO -- In his first speech to the League of Arab Nations, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday told Syrian leader Bashar Assad to learn from recent history and step down immediately "before it?s too late."
Addressing Arab foreign ministers in Cairo, the Islamist president urged them to make Syria their first priority.
The address was Morsi's first key foreign policy speech since he was elected two months ago following the uprising that deposed Hosni Mubarak last year. In the Middle East, his comments were perceived as a tenacious effort to assert the country?s influence in the region.?
?Our Syrian brethren are dear to us all and Syria is in our hearts. I repeat what I said in Mecca and Tehran: The blood of the Syrian people is on all of our necks,? he told 21 members of the Arab League, excluding Syria, whose membership was suspended in November.
Morsi said Egypt would support the Syrian people?s struggle for freedom without interfering in the country's internal affairs.?
He also said that foreign intervention in Syria would not be welcomed. The comment was seen as directed at Iran, whose leaders have previously expressed support for the Syrian regime. The Assad family, which has ruled Syria for four decades, are Alawites, an offshoot of the Shiite Muslim faith that predominates in Iran.
?There is still a chance to stop the spilling of blood before it?s too late,? Morsi said. ?This is not a time for arrogance. The Syrian people have said their word, it?s time to give them their demanded change now.?Morsi added that a group of regional states comprised of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt would meet to discuss the Syrian crisis.
In November, Arab League members voted to suspend and impose sanctions on Syria after its failure to end government violence against protesters. The move came after Syria, a founding member of the Arab League, refused to allow a 500-member team to observe and analyze the situation on the ground.
Since the Syrian uprising against Assad?s regime began, the United Nations estimated that 20,000 people have been killed in less than 18 months.
Although Morsi stressed the need for Arab unity to end the violence in Syria, he made no mention of the human rights situation in Bahrain, where Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Muslim nations have supported the monarchy in its crackdown against pro-democracy protesters who include Shiites.
Many Egyptian activists and international observers have berated Egypt for failing to address Bahrain?s uprising, which human rights advocates say has been met with excessive violence by government officials.
?Egypt's Morsi will not mention Bahrain. Think Saudi Arabia. Think Qatar. Think Egypt's economy,? Ed Husain, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter after Morsi?s speech at the Arab League.
Egypt, a predominantly Sunni country, has always enjoyed close relations with Saudi Arabia and relies heavily on the kingdom for economic aid and investments.
When Morsi was elected in late June, his first international visit was to Saudi Arabia. As Egypt moves to rebuild its staggering economy, a high-ranking business delegation from the Saudi Arabia is due in Egypt next month to explore bolstering economic ties and investments.
In his speech to the Arab delegates Wednesday, the Egyptian president also said "the Palestinian cause remains the first cause for the Arab world."

Pentagon maps Japan radiation, says U.S. personnel safe
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Wednesday posted a website mapping the amount of radiation to which the tens of thousands of Americans in Japan at the time of last year's earthquake and nuclear disaster were exposed and said none of the doses posed health risks.
The 9.0 magnitude March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami devastated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant north of Tokyo, triggering meltdowns, spewing radiation and prompting the Pentagon to announce voluntary evacuation for families of service members stationed in Japan.
The temblor generated a tsunami wave of up to 10 meters (33 feet) that swamped the Fukushima plant and the surrounding Tohoku region of central Honshu.
The website, http://registry.csd.disa.mil/otr, showed radiation dosages between March 12 and May 11 at 13 locations in Japan where most of the nearly 70,000 U.S. military-affiliated population lived.
It showed the highest rate of adult exposure at Camp Sendai, just north of Fukushima, where the estimated adult dose of whole body radiation was 0.12 rem and 1.20 for the thyroid - the organ most affected by radiation.
By comparison, a full-body CAT scan yields a whole body exposure of 5.0 rem.
Those American personnel who were stationed at Camp Sendai who check the website will see a message saying: "Your whole-body and thyroid radiation dose estimates are well below levels associated with adverse medical conditions."
"Since the estimated radiation doses and health risks associated with this event are so low, no one is being placed in a medical surveillance program to monitor their long-term health outcomes," the website said.
There were no children at Sendai, but children between one- and two-years-old at the Hyakuri Airbase south of Fukushima had an estimated whole body exposure of 0.16 rem and 2.70 rem.
The Pentagon said that by the end of the year it will issue final radiation dose estimates, including estimates for some 8,000 people who had their external or internal radiation measured directly.
Scientists are still studying the effects from Fukushima, the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl a quarter of a century earlier. Some nuclear experts have said Japan was slow to open up to foreign experts who could have helped it better contain the accident and manage the public health risks.
Last May, the operator of the crippled plant disclosed that radiation released in the first days of the Fukushima disaster was almost 2-1/2 times the amount first estimated by Japanese safety regulators.
Tokyo Electric Power said its own analysis put the amount of radiation released in the first three weeks of the accident at about one-sixth the radiation released during the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

LONDON (AP) ? Alex Zanardi just can't stop racing.
The former Formula One driver is vying for a Paralympic medal Wednesday in paracycling ? a hand cycle powered by the arms ? at the Brands Hatch race track, where he once raced cars. It's really incredible, when you realize the 45-year-old almost died in a horrific accident in a 2001 CART race in Germany.
"For a brief moment I found myself thinking of all the things I've done," Zanardi said on his Twitter feed before leaving for the London Paralympics. "I'm a lucky boy!"
His journey to the Paralympics began at the American Memorial 500 on Sept. 15, 2001, at the Eurospeedway Lausitz in Germany ? the only American-based series to go forward on the weekend after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Zanardi, a former two-time CART champion, had had a difficult season and started 22nd in a field of 27, but the car was responding well. He was enjoying the drive, passing one car after another, until with 13 laps to go he was in the lead.
Zanardi went into his final pit stop and the crew chief waved him off urging him to "Go, go, go!"
But as he built up speed to get back into the race, the car spun out of control and he veered onto the track. Canadian driver Alex Tagliani, traveling at close to 200 mph (320 kph), could not avoid him. The reinforced carbon fiber cone of Tagliani's car sliced through the area beside Zanardi's left front wheel and cockpit, the weakest part of the vehicle.
On the track, Dr. Terry Trammel slipped and fell as he raced to the wreckage. He thought he had fallen in oil, but it was Zanardi's blood.
The crash had severed Zanardi's right leg at the knee and his left at the thigh some five inches above the knee. The driver's lower legs had disintegrated like those of land mine victims, said Dr. Steve Olvey, director of medical affairs for CART at the time. He had lost 70 percent of his blood, his pelvis was fractured in five places and he had a lacerated liver.
But Zanardi was alive.
At the hospital, Zanardi's wife, Daniela, told him he had lost his legs. But that was only part of the problem. He had been in a coma for three days, his heart had stopped at least once, and he was alive only because of the medical response to his injuries.
Much work for his recovery lay ahead.
NASCAR driver Max Papis, who has known Zanardi since they were kids in Italy, recalled visiting his friend in the hospital, where Zanardi glanced at Papis' new shoes.
"He said to 'Look at the positive side of this. For a long time I will not have to spend money buying those,'" Papis said.
Pushing the limits, he began to walk again only months after the accident. Always tinkering, Zanardi used technology and his experience from working with elite race cars to forge a new life ? to adapt to his new circumstances, to learn how to use prosthetic legs.
"You don't know how many times I fell just taking ridiculous small steps," he told the BBC. "It was bloody hard."
Two years after the accident, he returned to Lausitz to finish the 13 laps, and later began racing specially modified touring cars. But he had many other races to run. Pity didn't occur to him.
"He's a lion," said his former teammate, Jimmy Vasser. "He just never gave up."
Zanardi thought of it as part of his destiny, just something that happened to him, said Chip Ganassi, who owns the team that Zanardi once raced for.
"That was like a speed bump for him," Ganassi said.
Zanardi took up paracycling to stay in shape. A hand cycle is powered by the arms and features two coasting rear wheels and one steerable front wheel. In 2007, he was invited to attend the pasta party at the New York City marathon that was thrown by his sponsor, Barilla. He decided that if he was going, he should take part.
At the race, he passed a well-known rider and finished fourth. By 2011, he was first.
Now he's challenging American Oscar "Oz" Sanchez, who won a gold medal in the time trial at the Paralympics in Beijing and a bronze medal in the road race.
Sanchez is a formidable competitor who overcame overwhelming odds as well. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sanchez turned a life of drugs and street gangs around by joining the U.S. Marines. He was about to transfer to the Navy Seals when he suffered a spinal cord injury in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident.
Zanardi knows the course will be tough ? he once drove the track at Brands Hatch, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from London. To make things worse, he had a bad crash with his favorite bike a few weeks ago ? a picture on his Twitter feed showed a crumpled vehicle, its front wheel askew.
But Papis said Zanardi had shrugged off such accidents.
"He would say, 'It can't be that bad, because I can't break my leg anymore,' " Papis said.
In the days before this big race, the normally talkative Zanardi has shunned interviews, concentrating on the task at hand, even as interest in his story has skyrocketed.
On Wednesday, it's all about the bike ? even though it's about a million other things, too.
"In my career I've always received a lot of support, but I would not expect so much as I'm getting these days," he told followers on Twitter. "Thank you all."

Swedish websites shut down by hacker attacks
STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Swedish government websites were jammed by hackers for hours Monday, with some supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange claiming responsibility on Twitter.
The websites of the Swedish government, Armed Forces and the Swedish Institute were among those experiencing problems.
Niklas Englund, head of digital media at the Swedish Armed Forces, said it was unclear who was behind the so-called denial-of-service attacks, in which websites are overwhelmed with bogus traffic.
But he noted that an unidentified group urging Sweden to take its "hands off Assange" claimed responsibility on Twitter.

With the Democratic National Convention starting tomorrow, CBS News political director John Dickerson explains the party plans on using former President Bill Clinton to break through the bleak mood caused by the recession to excite the base.That?s the first question that came to mind Monday morning while we were perusing the seating map for Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C., the host city. Arkansas, the state that produced the last Democrat who won reelection to the White House, ?doesn?t just have a bad location; the Arkansans have the worst seats in the place. They?re at the very back, in the middle of the arena, half-wedged behind a camera platform. Some of them might need periscopes to see the action at all.
OK, Arkansas is a red state now, likely to fall to GOP nominee Mitt Romney. Plus, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and her ex-presidential spouse haven?t lived there for years. But their current state, New York, is a blue leaner, big, and a crucial building block for any Democrat looking to put together an Electoral College victory. And New York?s seats are not fantastic. They?re right next to Arkansas in the back. Their only advantage is that they?re not behind the camera platform.
Is President Obama trying to send the Big Dog a subtle message? Illinois, Mr. Obama?s home, has the best front-and-center seats in the arena. Well, it?s easy to overthink this, so it?s probably just due to the fact that the Razorback delegation is a small group that hails from Romney territory. But still. We wouldn?t take the risk of maybe offending someone who?s giving a key speech. We?d at least have cleared it with him. (Of course, maybe Team Obama did.)
Other than that, the seating?s pretty much what you?d expect. Key swing states are up front ? we?re looking at you, Ohio. Illinois shares the front row with host state North Carolina and Delaware. (Joe Biden is from Delaware, in case you?re scratching your head.)
Colorado, New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida ? they?re all swing states, and their delegates are all close enough to the podium to actually see what?s going on.
In the back, Arizona, home of 2008 opponent Sen. John McCain, has perhaps the next-worst seats to Arkansas'. They?re on the other side of the camera cluster. The District of Columbia is stuck back there, too. So is New Jersey. Are Jersey Democrats getting hurt because of subliminal anger at Gov. Chris Christie?
Of course, the real Democratic seating problem isn?t inside the Time Warner Cable Arena. It?s over at Bank of America Stadium, a 74,000-seat football venue where Obama is scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech.
Given that voter enthusiasm is down among Democrats, some Democratic officials have worried about filling that cavernous space. Empty seats wouldn?t look good for the cameras.
According to the Associated Press, the DNC is going to bring in college students from the region by the busload. They?re also recruiting members of predominantly African-American churches.
?The response we?ve seen from the community has been incredible and it?s obvious that people have a big interest in owning a piece of the most open and accessible convention in history,? campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher told the AP.
