Google spares Gmail users on Windows Phone, extends ActiveSync deadline again

If you're a Gmail user on Windows Phone, your faith to the service must have been tested several times now this year. In January, Google planned on dropping support for Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync protocol, which Windows Phone users currently must rely on for syncing email, calendar, and contacts. The two companies came to a truce and the shutdown was set to begin after July 31, 2013. With the deadline looming and the majority of Windows Phone 8 users still without the GDR2 update that adds support for DAV syncing, Google has graciously decided to push back its deadline once more.

It's a surprising move by Google, and the statement sent to The Verge?reveals the deadline has been pushed back another half-year to December 31, 2013. Had Google not extended the deadline, Windows Phone users would have no way to sync their contacts or calendars, and would have to resort to the aging IMAP protocol for receiving email. While the latter wasn't a huge deal, losing out on contacts and calendars would have been a major issue for those who rely on their smartphones to manage their workflow and communications.

While not mentioned by Microsoft, we have a gut feeling this extension may have been a byproduct of the delays surrounding GDR2's release to existing Windows Phones. We can't imagine Microsoft agreeing to a deadline they didn't think they could meet in time. So Google and Microsoft, we're happy you patched things up over Gmail...but where's that official YouTube app?
