Hollyoaks star is blasted after train jump Twitter rant

HOLLYOAKS star James Sutton was slammed by his girlfriend ? after moaning at being delayed after a man jumped in front of a train.

And Virgin Trains bosses also criticised the actor, who plays John Paul McQueen in the Channel 4 soap, for complaining about the service.

Sutton, 30, was forced to apologise for his insensitive Twitter remark after his Liverpool to London train was delayed following the incident at Rugby, Warks.

He tweeted: ?Various trains to catch. If everyone could refrain from jumping in front of them for the next few hours, that would be great.?

But girlfriend Jessica Fox, 30, who plays Nancy Hayton in Hollyoaks, tweeted him: ?That?s somebodies child!!?

And Virgin?s tweet to him said: ?Some sensitivity would be appreciated, delayed or not.?

Confed Cup live: AP follows the final day action

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? The Associated Press is following events in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The Confederations Cup final between Brazil and Spain starts at 6 p.m. EDT. Follow this live feed for updates:

___

PROTEST & POLICE

Brazilian police told AP's Tales Azzoni it would allow people to protest outside Maracana Stadium as long as the demonstrations were peaceful. People without tickets usually are not allowed near the venue in FIFA tournaments, but Maracana sits in a crowded neighborhood and authorities said they would not keep local residents from the venue. A few civil law enforcement officers and an elite police unit were in front of the main entrance, watching the demonstrators. A handful of people were calling for attention to human trafficking, and others complained of Rio de Janeiro hospitals. "We want better conditions in the health services in Rio," said 59-year-old Geralda Ramos, who works at a local hospital. "We need to speak up because the government is not paying attention to us. We need better salaries and better equipment to be able to treat our people."

___

SOCCER, TANKS, RIOT GEAR

A crowd of protesters has started to make its way from Saenz Pena, a square not far from central Rio, and is heading for Maracana, says AP's Jenny Barchfield. Once they get near the stadium, they'll find officers in riot gear and tanks awaiting them. If there is going to be a violent standoff, it's likely to occur there.

___

ON ALERT

The Confederations Cup has been marked by violent anti-government protests, partly aimed at the high cost of staging next year's World Cup. More are expected for the final day of the Confederations Cup, but no one is quite sure how big they will be. Several thousand police have been put on alert, but as of noon in Rio, only a few hundred people had gathered in the center of the city, according to Barchfield. Outside Maracana Stadium, a handful of protesters held banners saying, "How much is silence worth?"

___

DRESSED IN YELLOW

Brazilian fans are already out on the streets in force, many wearing the team's traditional yellow colors. In the country that will host next year's World Cup, soccer is a serious event, and the match against world champion Spain may be one to remember. Brazil's national team has been rebuilding under coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, the same man who led the team to its fifth and last World Cup title in 2002. But the team has so far met Scolari's expectations, winning all four of its matches to reach the final. Spain made it through by beating Italy in a penalty-kick shootout in the semifinals, and could even be considered the underdog since it is playing at Maracana Stadium, Brazil's most renowned soccer venue.

Obama paying tribute to Mandela in S Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? President Barack Obama is meeting with South Africa's leader at the start of a weekend visit that will pay tribute to the legacy of critically ill former President Nelson Mandela.

As Obama harkens back to Mandela's leadership against apartheid, he'll also be trying to engage Africa's future by addressing some of the youth who make up such a large segment of the population on the continent.

Obama is making his first visit as president to South Africa, a leading African partner in U.S. trade and the fight against AIDS. His events Saturday are scheduled to begin with a bilateral meeting and news conference with President Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings, where Mandela was inaugurated as the country's first black president in 1994 after 27 years behind bars under racist rule.

Obama has called Mandela a "personal hero" and said the imprisoned activist's willingness to risk his life for the cause of equal rights helped inspire his own political activism. Obama said his message during the visit will draw on the lessons of Mandela's life, with a message that "Africa's rise will continue" if its people are unified instead of divided by tribe, race or religion.

"I think the main message we'll want to deliver if not directly to him but to his family is simply a profound gratitude for his leadership all these years and that the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with him and his family and his country," Obama said on his flight into the country.

Obama will be only about a 10-minute drive from the Pretoria hospital where 94-year-old Mandela lies in critical condition, but the president indicated he's not angling for a visit but instead is grateful that he, his wife and daughters had a chance to meet him previously. Obama hangs his photo of the introduction he had to Mandela in 2005 in his personal office at the White House ? their only meeting, when Obama was a senator.

"I don't need a photo op," Obama said. "The last thing I want to do is to be in any way obtrusive at a time when the family is concerned about Nelson Mandela's condition."

Obama also is paying tribute to the fight against apartheid by visiting Soweto township Saturday afternoon for a town hall with students at the University of Johannesburg. At least 176 young people were killed there 27 years ago this month during a youth protest against the apartheid regime's ban against teaching local Bantu languages. The Soweto Uprising catalyzed international support against apartheid, and June is now recognized as Youth Month in South Africa.

The university plans to bestow an honorary law degree on the U.S. president, while protesters are planning demonstrations against U.S. policy on issues including the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the war in Afghanistan and global warming. Hundreds marched to the U.S. Embassy on Friday, carrying signs that read: "No, You Can't Obama," a message inspired by Obama's "yes, we can" campaign slogan.

Obama, the son of an African man, has been trying to inspire the continent's youth to become civically active and part of a new democratically minded generation. Obama hosted young leaders from more than 40 African countries at the White House in 2010 and challenged them to bring change to their countries by standing up for freedom, openness and peaceful disagreement.

Obama wraps up his South Africa stay Sunday, when he plans to give a sweeping speech on U.S.-Africa policy at the University of Cape Town and take his family to Robben Island to tour the prison where Mandela spent 18 years.

Egyptian police officer shot dead in Sinai

CAIRO (Reuters) - A senior Egyptian police officer was shot dead by unknown gunmen who ambushed his car in the Sinai Peninsula town of El Arish on Saturday, security sources and state media said.

Armed groups have exploited a security vacuum in the Sinai, which borders Israel, since a 2011 uprising ousted president Hosni Mubarak. The mainly Islamist and Bedouin groups have kidnapped tourists and police to press the government for the release of jailed colleagues.

Three masked gunmen in a vehicle opened fire with automatic weapons on the officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Hani, as he returned from work on Saturday, state news agency MENA said. Hani's driver was seriously wounded, the report added.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.

The interior minister ordered the formation of a team to comb the area and arrest the gunmen, MENA said, without naming any suspects.

Over the past few days violence has broken out across Egypt between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Mursi ahead of opposition rallies planned for Sunday to demand the Islamist president's resignation.

At least three people were killed in protests on Friday, including a 21-year-old American student, and demonstrators have steeled themselves for more violence.

8 things you probably didn't know about Apple's iOS 7

Your gadgets

Apple

Apple

Some were quickly mentioned when Apple unveiled iOS 7, some can be spotted on the company's website, and some were revealed by developers poking around in the software ? but all of the following iOS 7 features, due in a free OS upgrade for iPhone and iPad this fall, are likely to come as a surprise, perhaps even a delight.

Block calls and messages
If you want to prevent someone from calling you, messaging you or initiating a FaceTime video chat, you are nearly out of luck on the iPhone. Elaborate third-party solutions typically only work if you've jailbroken your device ? unlocked to run software not authorized by Apple ? or if you've complained to your carrier about harassment from a particular individual. But in iOS 7, Apple has announced a way "to prevent specific people from being able to contact you."

Bigger folders, more icons you can hide
Folders are bigger than ever in the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system. Instead of only having room for 16 apps, folders can contain pages and pages of apps ... and they can even hold Newsstand. That's right. In iOS 7, you can finally stash Newsstand into a folder and not have to stare at it all the time, Cult of Mac discovered.

Apple

Apple

Smarter, more relevant notifications
The Notifications Center consists of three sections in iOS 7 ? "today," "all," and "missed." The "today" section presents a quick summary of what's going on: How the weather looks and whether it's someone's birthday, but also more prescient stuff, like whether you should leave early for a meeting because traffic is looking bad. If it sounds a little like what Google Now does for Android, that's because it is similar, but it's a welcome addition to iOS that may keep you better organized.

Teach Siri how to pronounce names
Those of us with awkwardly pronounced names can finally teach Siri how we want her (or him) to say 'em. Instead of relying just on phonetic spellings, Siri will ask you how you want a name pronounced and then take some time to learn it, 9to5Mac says.

Special inboxes
Wouldn't it be nice if you could see all the emails addressed directly to you (rather than to some email alias or distribution list) at once? Or how about just emails with some sort of attachment? Special inboxes built into the Mail app on iOS 7 let you, says Cult of Mac. These new inboxes behave a lot like the VIP inbox already found in iOS ? they don't duplicate content, but instead provide another way to view it.

Bulk email management
It's frustrating that there's no way to mark a bunch of emails as read on the iPhone. You'll get that ability in iOS 7, say the folks at FastCompany. You'll be able to select multiple emails and mark 'em all as read or unread "in one fell swoop."

Apple

Apple

Livephoto filters
At this point, most of us are used to adding filters to photos after we snap the pics. But the Camera app in iOS 7 allows for live previews. You'll see exactly how the photo will look in black and white or with a vintage filter before you ever even take it.

And the best part? These filters are applied in a non-destructive way. So even though the photo looks like it came straight out of the 1960s when you take it, your iPhone still has the "normal" version saved. You can revert to it (or switch to another filter) in an instant.

Swipe back through menus
Tired of tapping the "back" button to navigate through apps? You'll likely love that iOS 7 lets you swipe back from just about any screen with a "back" button, says Mac Rumors. This gesture seems so natural, odds are you'll immediately begin swiping from one side of the screen to the other to get through websites or Settings menus.

Bonus: One iOS 7 perk you can get now
iOS 7 adds a neat button to Safari to switch into "private" browsing mode, so you can shop for presents or do other secret stuff, without leaving a history or cookie trail in the browser. But you can already access this "private" mode in the current iOS. Just go to Settings, tap on Safari and flip the "Private Browsing" toggle.

NO MORE a "App List"! A Symbol/ Icon view as in iOS or Android! [updated]

Lol, if you hate, you shouldn't use. This App List makes WP different from two others! This is WP and this is what WP users fall in love with WP. And honestly, App List is much more easier to search app. You should try to download about 50 apps on WP,iOS, Android and make a compare. I believe you'll find out how better App List is. Totally disagree with you.

Alt-week takes a look at the best science and alternative tech stories from the last seven days.

Altweek 62913 Darpa's robot finalists, IRIS solar mission launch and computers that feel your pain

Sure, DARPA is slightly sinister, but it's so into robots that we're willing to let that slide. In fact, last year it launched the DARPA Robotics Challenge, and it just announced the top six nine seven teams to advance. But if just the idea of figuring out robotics frustrates you, NC State's face tracking program literally gets that, and NASA just launched the IRIS solar probe from the belly of a transport jet. It's Alt-week, baby.

Pixar Plans Fewer Sequels

pixar logo

There?s no doubt about it: Pixar has lost some of its luster.? The animation studio used to be the company that could do no wrong, but following its first truly disappointing film?Cars 2?Pixar?s subsequent output has yet to receive the same universal acclaim that was previously almost guaranteed.? This year?s Pixar release, Monsters University, has fared a bit better than Cars 2 and Brave as far as critical acclaim goes (I loved it), but there are still plenty who claim that the pic is not ?up to snuff? with regards to the very high bar that the studio set in its initial run.

One of the main complaints against Pixar in recent years is the studio?s new propensity for sequels.? Now Pixar Studios President Ed Catmull says that the plan is to scale back on follow-ups in the near future, with the aim of making one original film a year and alternating sequels only every other year.? Hit the jump for more.

ed-catmull-pixarPrior to the brilliant Toy Story 3, Pixar had only made one sequel (Toy Story 2) out of a total of 10 films.? But of the studio?s past four films, only one has been an original outing.? Personally I think most of the flack that Pixar is getting has to do with just how bad Cars 2 was, but while the production-troubled Brave was in no way a terrible film, it didn?t necessarily feel like the Pixar we?ve come to expect.

With Andrew Stanton working on the follow-up Finding Dory as we speak, some are worried that Pixar has ?sequel fever.?? Speaking with Buzzfeed, however, Pixar chief Ed Catmull says that the studio is well aware of possible overkill and wants to focus on more original content in the near future:

?For artistic reasons ? it?s really important that we do an original film a year,? says Catmull, who also serves as president of Walt Disney Animation. ?Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world ? which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren?t doing original films.?

Catmull went on to say that the studio?s strategy going forward will see original fare hitting theaters more frequently than sequels:

It?s part of what Catmull says is a strategy to release ?one and a half? films a year. ?We?re going to have an original film every year, then every other year have a sequel to something,? he says. ?That?s the rough idea.?

finding-nemo-doryPixar has been trying to release two films a year for some time now, and if you?ll recall the original plan was for both Brave and Monsters University to hit theaters last year.? As of now, 2015 will see two Pixar films opening: Up director Pete Docter?s Inside Out on June 19th, and the aforementioned Finding Dory on November 25th.? If that plan sticks, don?t expect to see another Pixar sequel or prequel until 2017.? Fingers crossed for The Incredibles 2.

As a refresher, here?s a look at Pixar?s upcoming release schedule as it stands now.

  • The Good Dinosaur ? May 30, 2014
  • Inside Out ? June 19, 2015
  • Finding Dory ? November 25, 2015
  • Untitled Pixar Film about Dia de los Muertos ? June 17, 2016
  • Untitled Pixar Film ??June 16, 2017
  • Untitled Pixar Film ? November 22, 2017
  • Untitled Pixar Film ? June 15, 2018

NSA Whistleblower William Binney Was Right - Business Insider

William Binney ? one of the best mathematicians and code breakers in National Security Agency (NSA) history ? worked for America's premier covert intelligence gathering organization for 32 years before resigning in late 2001 because he "could not stay after the NSA began purposefully violating the Constitution."

Binney claims that the NSA took one of the programs he built, known as ThinThread, and started using the program and members of his team to spy on virtually every U.S. citizen under the code-name Stellar Wind.

Thanks to NSA whistleblower/leaker Edward Snowden, documents detailing the top-secret surveillance program have now been published for the first time.

And they corroborate what Binney has said for years.

From Glenn Greenwald and Spencer Ackerman of The Guardian:

The collection of email metadata on Americans began in late 2001, under a top-secret NSA program started shortly after 9/11, according to the documents. Known as Stellar Wind, the program initially did not rely on the authority of any court ? and initially restricted the NSA from analyzing records of emails between communicants wholly inside the US.

However, the NSA subsequently gained authority to "analyze communications metadata associated with United States persons and persons believed to be in the United States," according to a secret Justice Department memo from 2007 that was obtained by the Guardian.

Binney explains that how ThinThread was built to track electronic activities ? phone calls, emails, banking and travel records, social media , etc. ? and map them to collect "all the attributes that any individual has" in every type of activity and build a real-time profile based on that data.

"So that now I can pull your entire life together from all those domains and map it out and show your entire life over time," Binney told documentarian Laura Poitras in "The Program" (emphasis ours). Binney added that the purpose of the program is "to be able to monitor what people are doing" and who they are doing it with.

Greenwald and Ackerman, citing the NSA documents, describe how mining metadata from U.S. phone calls and especially Internet communications, which continues to this day, allows the NSA to performs "contact chaining" by which the agency can "analyzed networks with two degrees of separation (two hops) from [a] target."

From The Guardian (emphasis ours):

"The calls you make can reveal a lot, but now that so much of our lives are mediated by the internet, your IP [internet protocol] logs are really a real-time map of your brain: what are you reading about, what are you curious about, what personal ad are you responding to (with a dedicated email linked to that specific ad), what online discussions are you participating in, and how often?" said Julian Sanchez of the Cato Institute.

"Seeing your IP logs ? and especially feeding them through sophisticated analytic tools ? is a way of getting inside your head that's in many ways on par with reading your diary," Sanchez added.

On July 2 Binney, along with two other former NSA employees, agreed to provide evidence in the Electronic Frontier Foundation's lawsuit (Jewel vs. NSA) that alleges the U.S. government operates an illegal mass surveillance program.

Given the latest leaks, that testimony looks rock solid.

And Greenwald and Ackerman report that the NSA's Special Source Operations (SSO) directorate have "ongoing plans to expand metadata collection."

?I should apologize to the American people,? Binney told Jane Mayer of The New Yorker. ?It?s violated everyone?s rights. It can be used to eavesdrop on the whole world.?

Turkey probes social network 'insults'

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkish authorities are investigating people who allegedly insulted state officials or incited riots on social media, the deputy prime minister said Thursday, in a sign the government is intent on meting out punishment over the massive protests that swept the country in June.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has faced tough international criticism over his government's heavy-handed crackdown on the unprecedented demonstrations. But in a possible attempt to soften the blow to the country's democratic reputation, his deputy also said the government would propose further checks on the country's historically powerful military.

The Aksam newspaper said police had provided to Istanbul prosecutors a list of 35 names of people who had allegedly insulted Erdogan or other officials on Twitter or Facebook. Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag acknowledged the probe, but would not confirm the list. It was not clear exactly what the posts said.

Meanwhile, Facebook expressed concerned about Turkish proposals that would require Internet companies to provide user information to authorities.

Erdogan earlier this month branded Twitter a social "menace" for spreading lies after many people turned to the social networking site and Facebook for information. Many Turkish media outlets provided little coverage in the early stages of the demonstrations, likely intimidated into self-censorship by the government's previously tough approach to journalists.

Nearly three weeks of protests were sparked by a violent police crackdown on peaceful activists on May 31, with thousands expressing discontent over what they say are Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian ways. Erdogan who has shepherded Turkey to an economic boom and raised the country's international profile, rejects the charge and cites his broad support base.

The government has dismissed protesters' general calls for a more pluralistic society and has blamed the protests on a foreign-led conspiracy involving bankers and the media meant to stop Turkey on its tracks. It has also vowed to go after them.

Bozdag took aim at the social media users under investigation, claiming that there were many "profanities and insults conducted electronically" that were against the law. Turkish law bars insults to public figures.

"Crimes determined as such by the law don't change if they are carried out through Facebook, Twitter or through other electronic means," Bozdag said. "No one has the right to commit crimes under the rule of law."

On Wednesday, Turkey's transport and communications minister complained that Twitter was not cooperating with authorities and said the company has been asked to appoint a Turkey-based official to deal with requests.

Binali Yildirim suggested Facebook was more cooperative, but the company released a statement saying it had not provided user data to Turkish authorities in relation to the protests and was concerned about proposals that would require Internet companies to share information.

"We will be meeting with representatives of the Turkish government when they visit Silicon Valley this week, and we intend to communicate our strong concerns about these proposals directly at that time," Facebook said.

Human rights groups say dozens of people have been arrested and face trial for their involvement in the protests, which resulted in at least four deaths and thousands of injuries ? including 11 who lost eyes or their eyesight from tear gas canisters fired by police.

But even as the government took a hard line on social media, it appeared to be trying to make some amends. Though the European Union decided to revive long-dormant EU membership talks with Turkey this week, it said it would delay them until later this year, citing the government's heavy-handed crackdown on the protests.

Bozdag said Parliament will consider a government-proposed proposal that would amend a regulation that the army has cited in the past as grounds for takeovers or interference in politics. It stipulates that it is the military's duty "to watch over and protect the Turkish Republic."

The Turkish military has frequently intervened in politics in the past, and has staged three coups.

Though new democratic proposal came out of the blue, Erdogan has been at odds with the military for much of his 10 years in office. He has enacted reforms over the years that have curbed the powers of the military, winning him praise for strengthening democracy.

Earlier, this week, the government had also said it was considering a set of measures that would grant greater religious rights to the country's Alevi Muslim community ? who have faced discrimination in Turkey.

Criticize Dentist On Yelp, Get Threatened With Felony 'Internet ...

A Texas mother took her child to a dentist who only works on children based on the referral of the family?s regular dentist. She didn?t really like the specialist, and wrote a relatively short, clear Yelp review explaining why. That got her a letter from the dentist?s attorney ordering her to take down her review, OR ELSE.

Or else what? Criminal charges of ?internet business defamation and libel.? This scared the reviewer, understandably, so she sought help, ultimately leading her to Ken White?s excellent law blog Pope Hat. A reader of that site who is a licensed attorney in Texas volunteered to smack down the dentist?s attorney, and the resulting letter is an eight-page thing of beauty that breaks down the attorney?s thuggish claims and points out precisely why it?s wrong to threaten to sue or prosecute someone for offering their opinion on the Internet.

Most people might post a review online, get a mean letter from a lawyer, and drop the whole thing out of fear that they would be sued or prosecuted for libel. It?s easier to take down a Yelp review than it is to hire a lawyer, right? The thing is, the attorney who helped out this family happened to know that Texas did away with its criminal libel law statutes in the middle of the 20th century. What the state does have are anti-SLAPP statutes, which prevent people and companies from filing lawsuits just to silence critics, especially critics making factually true claims.

What else would you call threatening to file a defamation suit against someone for posting her impressions of a visit to the dentist? What is it with pediatric dentists and suing people over not-all-that-scathing Yelp reviews, anyway?

Go read the actual letter: it links to everything from relevant statutes to a video clip from ?The Simpsons.?

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than MustangThe P-51 Mustang is one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history. These long-range, single-seater fighter-bombers served throughout the Seconds World War as well as during in Korea before being relegated to scrap yards. But many have survived, some in the most unlikely of places. You'll never guess what quiet suburb the Lil' Margaret was found in.

P-51D (F-6D) Lil? Margaret

?Mustang Mike? Coutches of American Aircraft Sales in Hayward, California, was on the hunt for P-51H parts in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Coutches was selling licensed, ready-to-fly P-51Ds for $3,995 at the time, but his interest was in the P-51H. The 194th Fighter Squadron of the California Air National Guard operated P-51Ds and -51Hs from the Hayward Airport, and it was a sad day when the unit moved to Fresno, California, and transitioned to the F-86A. About a hundred miles northeast of Hayward, the U.S. Air Force depot at Mc-Clellan Air Force Base, near Sacramento, California, had seen hundreds of Mustangs pass through its overhaul lines and dozens were sold surplus from here as well. In addition, thousands of pounds of Mustang parts were auctioned off as they were no longer needed in an all-jet air force.

In the late 1940s, someone had purchased a Mustang at a surplus sale (possibly at McClellan), and then attempted to sell it to Israel or one of the Latin American countries looking for aircraft in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The plane was reportedly disassembled, crated, sitting on the dock, about to be loaded on a ship, when U.S. Customs stepped in and seized the Mustang. The aircraft did not leave the country and was later sold at auction and then purchased by a scrap dealer.

Coutches was going into one particular Sacramento-area salvage yard that was rich in H model Mustang parts?parts that only Mustang Mike needed and wanted. Every time he would go in, the scrap dealer would bug him to buy a disassembled D model Mustang sitting in a corner of the yard, but they could never reach an agreement as Mustang Mike didn?t want a disassembled P-51D when he could buy flying aircraft for not much more of a premium.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Coutches returned once again, and the scrapman finally told him if he wanted any more H model parts, he was going to have to buy the disassembled P-51D Mustang. The aircraft was ready for transport, so Mustang Mike hauled it home and put it in his backyard. The story has it that the Coutches?s kids played on it for years.

In 1961, William ?Bill? Myers of St. Charles, Missouri, bought the disassembled P-51D from Coutches. Hauled east, the fighter plane project took over Myers?s house, basement, and garage. And slowly word got around the neighborhood that there was a plane in a garage. The rumor gained legs as people would see it when the door was up, and by the mid-1970s as the warbird movement picked up steam, the rumor had grown and was beginning to spread to pilots in neighboring states.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Mustang owner and restorer John Dilley from the Fort Wayne Air Service, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Butch Schroeder of Danville, Illinois?who at the time owned former El Salvadorean Air Force Cavalier conversion P-51D FAS 409, ex 45-11559, North American Maid?had heard the rumor, too. ?I kind of beat Dilley to it,? said Schroeder. ?I had the opportunity to go to St. Louis on business and I was always looking in the phone book trying to find who I thought was the owner at the time, but I always ended up empty handed.

?A short time later, a friend of mine who owned a Hawker Sea Fury asked me to take North American Maid to an airshow in St. Charles, Missouri. I asked if the airshow was going to pay for fuel and said I wasn't interested in going without it. After turning him down, we got to talking about this mystery Mustang, which was thought to be in the same area. My friend said the hosts of the airshow knew where the Mustang was, and I?m thinking ?Yeah, right.? I told my friend that if the show hosts would take me to see the plane, then I?d fly down.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

?I went to the airshow and one evening they took me to see the Mustang, and on the way over they said they were not interested in buying it. So I tried and made a deal to buy the plane.? Butch Schroeder had found the elusive P-51D Mustang in a garage, and bought it!

Restoring an F-6D Mustang

Upon closer inspection, Schroeder determined that the Mustang was a rare photo reconnaissance version of the P-51D known as an F-6D, and later an RF-51D, serial number 44-84786. ?When we researched the history of the airplane, we knew exactly what we were looking at. It still had the original data plate showing it was designated an F-6D. It was kind of ironic; most of your airplanes have a metal data tag with the information stamped in it. This was all done on phenolic and it was handwritten using something like a paintbrush,? Schroeder said.

The F-6D was built at North American Aviation?s Dallas, Texas, factory and delivered on June 8, 1945, after the war in Europe had ended, but still three months before the Japanese surrendered. The photoreconn fighter was assigned to U.S. Army Air Force bases at Andrews, Washington, D.C.; Stuttgart, Arkansas; Brooks Field, Texas; Topeka, Kansas; Hobbs Field, New Mexico; Spokane, Washington; Kelly Field, Texas; Pope Field, North Carolina; and finally to McClellan Air Force Base, part of the Air Material Command, for storage in June 1949. The F-6D was stricken from the air force?s inventory on November 25, 1949.

As the now proud-owner of a Mustang project, Schroeder had to get the fighter from the St. Louis area home to Danville, Illinois, a distance of 215 miles. First he had to call his friends with pickup trucks, then find enough additional friends to help load the project. ?Bill Myers?s wife was real glad to see the Mustang go because, in essence, I had to clean their garage to get the plane out,? Schroeder said. ?I think it took us six pickup trucks and five trailers and we went down early one morning, loaded up, and we and had it back home that afternoon.? Myers had about 95 percent of the airplane, and what he didn't have Schroder would use his extensive contacts in the warbird community to locate.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Once home, the P-51D was stored in Schroeder?s hangar while he worked with Mike VadeBonCoeur to return his AT-6 to full, stock military configuration. ?I had become friends with Mike when he was still in high school,? Schroeder said. ?He came and started just helping me and I would pay him flying time in exchange so he could work on getting his pilot?s license. So in essence, to start out with, he worked for me, and then years later, he went off on his own and started Midwest Aero.? VadeBonCoeur had worked with Schroeder on his warbirds before leaving to attend Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When he returned, VadeBonCoeur and Schroeder finished the restoration of U.S. Air Force T-6G serial number 49-3144 in 1990. The aircraft was awarded the Experimental Aircraft Association?s Warbird Reserve Grand Champion Award, and VadeBonCoeur was recognized with the Golden Wrench Award for his work. Today, VadeBonCoeur?s Midwest Aero has been recognized for its highly detailed, award-winning P-51D Mustang restorations, such as Cripes A? Mighty, Daddy?s Girl, Happy Jack?s Go Buggy, Live Bait, and Red Dog.

?I was doing most of that early work on the T-6 and the Mustang part time, as I had a really nice job at the University of Illinois,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?I left the University of Illinois to come work for Butch full time on the T-6. I kind of always had it in the back of my mind that if I was going to leave a good, solid university position that my hope and goal was to be able to eventually start my own business.?

Once the T-6G was out of the hangar, Schroeder and VadeBonCoeur began the restoration of the photoreconnaissance Mustang full time. The project would take three more years of hard work. ?This airplane had never been a surveying airplane or a warbird. When we got it, it still had the markings on the wings and was pretty much the way it had come out of the factory. So early on, it was decided that the goal was to make it look just like the day that it rolled out of the factory and keep it stock?single seat, guns, cameras, the whole deal,? Schroeder said. ?For some reason, guns had never been put in that airplane even though a lot of the equipment was in there. We had to go out and I made about three different trips to California scrounging around. Back then, the rare, original fittings were pretty easy to find because nobody wanted them. Now, everybody wants those detail parts, so they?re much harder to find. There?s an armor plate that sits right behind the propeller to protect the fuel tank that?s back there. I found it in California at a Mustang shop and they were using it just to prop the door open. The armor plating that goes behind the seat . . . somebody was using it as a barbecue grill.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

?I had a list of everything that I was looking for, and I left copies with people, and again, at the time, this was stuff that nobody wanted. I can?t remember if it was Strega or Stiletto, but one of the racing Mustangs had been an F-6D and some original, cool stuff came out of one of them. Later I was out in Fort Collins, Colorado, and I went and talked to Darrel Skurich [known for rebuilding the XP-51 on display at the Experimental Aircraft Association Museum]. He had the camera mount I needed for my aircraft. Dennis Schoenfelder had the camera ports, but they needed some repair work, which was done by John Neel of Low Pass Inc. in Griffin, Georgia. I also had the good fortune to become friends with Brian O?Farrell. He?s the guy that bought all the Dominican Mustangs and their spares, and he had a warehouse full of brand-new parts. I had the chance to pick through O?Farrell?s inventory of new parts for my airplane.?

Mike VadeBonCoeur said, ?We did everything except the engine, propeller, the radiator, and instruments. I probably built most of the systems. I did all of the hydraulic systems, all the electrical wiring, most of all of the installation of the interior components, and basically all of the assembly work. Butch had already restored certain components and had those sitting aside and ready to go in.?

Try as he might, Schroeder could never locate any factory blueprints for the F-6D conversion. None of the P-51D Mustang microfilm showed any of the photoreconnaissance modifications, and many parts had to be made from photos, or from original parts that were duplicated. Schroeder?s Cavalier Mustang was used as a template for the interior installations, but when it came to the F-6 modifications, the restoration crew was on its own. ?There are no diagrams for cable links, for instance, for the trim cables or the elevator cables, and are all modified in the rear fuselage to avoid the cameras. It?s different than a standard P-51D in the oxygen bay area as well, so we kind of had to experiment trying to come up with proper cable links,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?I remember that being a challenge for me at the time, but we ended up making it all happen. I think we had samples of elevator cables, but we didn't have samples of any of the trim cables. Those had disappeared from the fuselage years ago, so I didn't really have anything to go off of. We kind of had to back-blueprint it and sort it all out. We just followed the original routing, which in an F-6D the elevator and trim cables are all routed differently than they are in a stock D.

There?s just not data available that we've been able to come up with that I've ever seen. The manuals show illustrations of how the cables were routed, but no specifics for cable links and things like that.?

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

Mating the wing to the fuselage was a first for VadeBonCoeur. ?We had called a crane out to do the heavy lifting, and we looked at the weather radar before we got started. Of course, back in 1990, the weather radar wasn't as good and no one had a smartphone to give one last peek to see how conditions had changed. We decided to go ahead and do it, and as soon as we got the airplane up, got the wing put in position, and were ready to lift the fuselage up, a thunderstorm hit,? VadeBonCoeur said. ?We ended up putting that thing together in a pouring rainstorm, and of course, once we were done and the crane was ready to leave, it was beautiful. Fuselage to wing was in the middle of a rainstorm, the engine we did the same day and it went just fine.?

Inside the F-6D, the oxygen bottle arrangement is different from the standard P-51D. The -51D has two long and two short bottles in the aft fuselage while the F-6D uses large, bomber-size oxygen bottles. In addition, the ribs on the left side of the fuselage were changed to accommodate the camera installations. To access the cameras, an access panel was fitted to the starboard side of the fuselage, forward of the fuselage/tail production break.

?In comparison to what we do today, there?s really no comparison. A lot of it is just learning over the years. I think that we knew that the interior color that it is today wasn't what it was, but Butch had already started that and it wasn't in his best interest, or desire at that point, to go backwards and change it all,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?We left it with interior Imron green that he had picked.?

Putting Her Back in the Air

When the restoration was nearly complete, Schroeder settled on a suitable paint scheme for the F-6D. He chose to replicate the markings of Lil? Margaret flown by Capt. Clyde B. East, who, at age nineteen, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and entered the European war flying P-51As against targets along the enemy coast. He transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces and was assigned to the Ninth Air Force?s 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron flying Supermarine Spitfires. The squadron transitioned into the P-51B, and then into the F-6D.

East participated in the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion, downing an Fw-190; the December 1944 Battle of the Bulge (one Bf-109); and in March and April 1945 downed another eleven enemy aircraft. By war?s end, East had thirteen confirmed aerial victories. After the war, he remained in the service, and later flew reconnaissance Mustangs and RF-80s during the Korean War. East retired from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in February 1965.

Lil? Margaret?s first post restoration flight was done by John Dilley on June 18, 1993. ?I was the second person to fly the airplane,? Schroeder said. ?I guess it had this kind of an eerie feeling like somebody?s looking over your shoulder, which comes from the armor plating sitting right behind you, and trying to get used to looking through the gun sight. Originally the gun sight had kind of a gold colored lens in it and you had to look around it as you couldn?t look through it. We ended up changing that and putting in regular glass and that took care of the vision problem.

This Gorgeous Warbird Is More Phoenix Than Mustang

?I had quite a bit of time in the Mustang, having owned North American Maid before flying Lil? Margaret. When flying the plane, the first thing I noticed was that Lil? Margaret was heavier than the Cavalier P-51D because we had installed guns and ammunition, armor plating, and all that detail equipment. It probably adds up to a couple of hundred pounds.?

Schroeder has united East with the aircraft resplendent in his colors many times, and East and Lil? Margaret have always drawn a big crowd when the two have been featured at the EAA?s Warbirds In Review at the annual airshow in Oshkosh. At EAA AirVenture 1993,Butch Schroeder?s Lil? Margaret was recognized with the EAA Warbirds Grand Champion Award, and Mike VadeBonCoeur was given the Golden Wrench in recognition of his restoration work on the F-6D.

Reflecting on the restoration, VadeBonCoeur said, ?I think the thing that most people probably appreciated about Lil? Margaret was all the original details that went into this restoration,? said VadeBonCoeur. ?I say original details meaning things like guns and the camera that was installed, and we put decals on. We made vinyl decals instead of what we do today, which uses water transfer materials like they did during the war, so in terms of authenticity it really is not anywhere close . . . I?d like to get another shot at it.

?At the time, Lil? Margaret was certainly heralded as a really authentic airplane; however, today it is not anywhere close to the standards we do, or even other people do in a Mustang restoration. For instance, we made one North American Aviation inspection stamp during the F-6D rebuild. Today I've got a box full of them so every time I find a new one, we try to replicate it and use it in the rebuild. That?s one difference between what we do today and what we did back then, but at the time that level of detail had not been seen yet. When people did see Lil? Margaret, they thought that attention to detail was really a nice touch. On top of that, it was an F-6D, and nobody had seen one with the camera, fuselage gas tank, the armor plating, all the wing guns installed, bomb racks that worked, and basically a stock instrument panel. Most Mustangs at the time were restored with gray interiors and modern avionics everywhere, leather interiors, and that was the standard. I think Lil? Margaret was one of the first airplanes,if not the first, with so much original equipment. I think what we?vedone was really nice, but it was just something different?something people hadn?t seen before.?

In December 2012, Schroder is doing Lil? Margaret?s annualinspection and the airplane has 158 hours on it. With pride, Schroeder said, ?I?ve probably flown half of that.?

For Butch Schroeder the tale of a Mustang in a garage is true and he?s got flying proof!

(AP) ? Tigers at the Phoenix Zoo are getting frozen fish snacks. Temporary cooling stations are popping up to welcome the homeless and elderly. And airlines are monitoring the soaring temperatures to make sure it's safe to fly as the western U.S. falls into the grip of a dangerous heat wave.

A strong high-pressure system settling over the region Friday and through the weekend will bring extreme temperatures to the already blazing Southwest. Notoriously hot Death Valley in California is forecast to reach 129 degrees, not far off the world-record high of 134 logged there exactly one century ago.

The National Weather Service predicts Phoenix could reach a high of 118 on Friday, while Las Vegas could see the same temperature over the weekend.

Temperatures are expected to soar across Utah and into parts of Wyoming and Idaho, where forecasters are calling for triple-digit heat in the Boise area through the weekend.

Cities in Washington state better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s early next week, while northern Utah ? marketed as having "the greatest snow on Earth" ? is expected to hit triple digits. In Albuquerque, N.M., the mercury hit 105 on Thursday afternoon, the hottest it has been in the state's most populous city in 19 years.

"This is the hottest time of the year but the temperatures that we'll be looking at for Friday through Sunday, they'll be toward the top. We'll be at or above record levels in the Phoenix area and throughout a lot of the southwestern United States," said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark O'Malley. "It's going to be baking hot across much of the entire West."

Jennifer Smith, a spokeswoman for the National Interagency Fire Center based in Idaho, said crews are especially worried about wildfires igniting in the Four Corners region where the borders of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona intersect.

Some of the strongest parts of the high pressure system are expected to be parked over the area through the weekend, where forecasters are calling for lightning but little to no precipitation, Smith said.

Scientists say that the jet stream, the river of air that dictates weather patterns, has been more erratic in the past few years. It's responsible for weather systems getting stuck, like the current heat wave. Scientists disagree on whether global warming is the cause of the jet stream's behavior.

The hottest cities are taking precautions to protect vulnerable residents. Police are pleading with drivers not to leave children or pets in vehicles, and temporary cooling stations are being put up to shelter homeless people and the elderly on fixed incomes who hesitate to use air conditioning.

Officials said extra personnel have been added to the U.S. Border Patrol's Search, Trauma, and Rescue unit as people illegally crossing the border from Mexico into Arizona could succumb to exhaustion and dehydration. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the desert's brutal heat.

Even airlines are watching the mercury for any signs that temperatures could deter operations.

In June 1990, when Phoenix hit 122 degrees, several airlines, including America West, which later merged with US Airways, were forced to cease flights for several hours because the planes didn't have the data needed to know how they would fly in temperatures above 120 degrees.

US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher said the airline's fleet of Boeings can now fly up to 126 degrees, and up to 127 degrees for the Airbus fleet.

But the company's smaller express planes flying out of the Phoenix area may be delayed if the temperature tops 118 because as the air heats up, it becomes less dense and changes liftoff conditions.

"The hotter is it, your performance is degraded," Lehmacher said. "We're monitoring this very closely to see what the temperatures do."

Officials at Salt River Project, the Phoenix area's largest electricity provider, also are closely monitoring usage in order to redirect energy in case of a potential overload.

Company spokeswoman Scott Harelson said he doesn't expect usage to get anywhere near SRP's record 6,663 megawatts consumed in August 2011.

"While it's hot, people tend to leave town and some businesses aren't open, so that has a tendency to mitigate demand and is why we typically don't set records on weekends," Harelson said.

Meanwhile, over at the Phoenix Zoo, animals from elephants to warthogs will be doused with hoses and sprayed with sprinklers and misters throughout the weekend.

The tigers will get frozen fish snacks while the lions can lounge on concrete slabs cooled by internal water-filled pipes, said zoo spokeswoman Linda Hardwick.

"And they'll all have plenty of shade," she said. "The keepers will all just be very active looking for any behavior changes, anything that would tip them off that an animal is just getting too hot."

In Las Vegas, two Elvis impersonators and a performer costumed as the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign said they still planned to keep up their routine of working the tourist corridor in the broad daylight and turning in for the evenings, heat notwithstanding.

"We'd much rather fight with the sun than fight with the drunk people," Elvis impersonator Cristian Morales said.

BlackBerry ships 6.8 million smartphones but loses $84 million in fiscal Q1 2014

STUB BlackBerry made a TKTK profit last quarter, shipped TKTK BB10 phones

Every quarter is pivotal for BlackBerry right now, but the one covered by today's earnings report (Q1 2014, in fiscal terms) is especially important. It's the first full period of Z10 availability and also the first quarter to cover significant Q10 shipments to markets like Canada and the UK (although not the US). So far, the news looks mixed, but mostly glum: revenues are up to $3.1 billion, compared to $2.8 billion generated in the same quarter last year, which was when RIM (as it was called back then) announced significant job cuts and an equally major delay to its next-gen BB10 operating system and hardware range. However, none of that cash was retained as profit, despite all the cost-cutting measures, and in fact BlackBerry made a GAAP loss of $84 million, reversing the positive shift seen last quarter when the company managed to keep hold of $94 million as profit. Worryingly, the press release provides no breakdown of the crucial BB10 device shipments, versus older devices. There's just a quote from Thorsten Heins saying "we are still in the early stages of this launch," which doesn't bode well -- although an imminent earnings call should provide further information.

Update: Execs on the earnings call refused to break down Z10 and Q10 shipments specifically, but did say that 40 percent of the 6.8 million reported shipments were BB 10 devices -- which adds up to a disappointing 2.7 million next-gen units.

Samsung Galaxy Exhibit (MetroPCS)

The $129 Samsung Galaxy Exhibit may not be the most exciting new smartphone, but it does have an interesting twist. While the name on this phone reads MetroPCS, it's actually running on T-Mobile's nationwide network?making it one of the first devices to do so since the companies recently merged. It's a completely average phone, and only available in a few cities, but it's a decent choice if you're looking to get onto T-Mobile's network.

Editors' Note: The Samsung Galaxy Exhibit models on MetroPCS and T-Mobile?are virtually identical, so we're sharing a lot of material between these two reviews. That said, we're testing each device separately, so read the review for your carrier of choice.

Design
The Samsung Galaxy Exhibit is a slightly modified version of the unlocked Galaxy S III Mini. Keep in mind, however, that the GS III Mini isn't a shrunken version of the Galaxy S III?the G S III is bigger and badder in every way. But the Galaxy Exhibit has similar software and features, wrapped up in a smaller, more pocketable design.

From the front, the Galaxy Exhibit does look a lot like a miniaturized version of the Galaxy S III, with the same single Home button, the same plastic silver ring around the face, and the same pebble blue color. But at 4.78 by 2.46 by 0.42 inches (HWD) and 4.27 ounces, it's a lot squatter, thicker, and less elegant. The back panel here is made of matte plastic, and a curiously blue metallic embellishment around the camera sensor makes it look like someone forgot to take the protective shipping sticker off of it.

The nice thing about the design is that this phone is a lot easier to handle than a big phone like the Galaxy S III, especially if you have smaller hands. But I found the on-screen keyboard a bit too small and difficult to type on, which isn't usually a problem I encounter on other phones this size. At least it has Swype built-in, which allows you to drag your finger across the keys in order to type out words more easily.

And speaking of size, the Galaxy Exhibit has a 3.8-inch, 800-by-480-pixel TFT LCD. It looks reasonably sharp, though colors aren't particularly brilliant, and it could stand to go a bit brighter. Two backlit capacitive touch keys can be found on either side of the physical Home key. There's a Power button on the right side of the phone, a Volume rocker and microSD slot on the left, and a power port on the bottom.

Network, Plans, and Call Quality
The Galaxy Exhibit is one of the first MetroPCS phones to run on T-Mobile's network. T-Mobile is GSM-based, as opposed to MetroPCS, which is CDMA. Right now you can only get this phone if you live in Boston, MA; Hartford, CT; or Las Vegas, NV. MetroPCS plans to add additional markets soon, though it makes your chance of getting on T-Mobile's network through MetroPCS extremely limited at the moment.

But if you're a MetroPCS user, why should you want to get on T-Mobile's network anyway? Well, since the T-Mobile/MetroPCS merger, MetroPCS will slowly be folded into T-Mobile. MetroPCS will ultimately stop selling CDMA phones, and while they will continue to work, there will be no additional improvements made to its CDMA network. This is in stark contrast to T-Mobile's GSM and LTE networks, which the company plans to improve considerably. On top of that, if you're using a MetroPCS phone, and you travel outside of the native coverage area, you start to roam on Sprint's 3G network. T-Mobile already has a wider coverage area than MetroPCS, and its 3G network is vastly superior to Sprint's, so you're going to see better speeds.

The Galaxy Exhibit can be paired with any current 4G service plan. Take that with a grain of salt, as the Galaxy Exhibit doesn't support T-Mobile's 4G LTE network, or even HSPA+ 42, so you're not actually getting real 4G data rates. Still, MetroPCS offers some pretty compelling contract-free rates. $40 per month gets you unlimited talk, text, and 500MB of '4G' data, with throttled speeds after that. $50 ups the ante to 2.5GB of '4G' data, while $60 per month gets you truly unlimited everything.

Compare those rates with T-Mobile, where each plan basically costs $10 more. Contract-free rates start at $50 per month, and that gets you all the talk and texts you want, along with 500MB of high-speed (3G or 4G) data per month, after which your speeds are throttled. $60 gets you 2GB of high-speed data, and $70 gets you unlimited high-speed data. But while T-Mobile is just a little pricier, you get a vastly larger selection of phones to choose from.
