WACO, Texas - Josh Turley tossed 5.2 shutout innings as Baylor knocked off Kansas, 10-2, on Friday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark. With the win, the Bears improved to 4-0 in Big 12 play, tying 1999 for the best Big 12 start in program history.

Baylor (16-7, 4-0 Big 12) won its fifth straight game overall. Turley (3-0) held Kansas (10-11, 0-1 Big 12) scoreless on six hits with four strikeouts over 5.2 innings. It was the 14th time in his last 16 starts that Turley has pitched at least 5.2 innings and the 20th time in 22 career starts he allowed three or fewer earned runs.

"I thought Turley competed," head coach Steve Smith said. "I didn't think he had his best stuff, but he hung in there. The strikeout to end the second and the couple double plays that we turned really helped."

Josh Ludy had three hits and three RBI for the Bears, and Lawton Langford went 2-for-3 with a triple, two walks and two runs scored. Jake Marasco had half of Kansas' eight hits in a 4-for-4 effort with one RBI.

The Bears got on the board quickly with two runs in the first and one more in the second. Ludy had a two-out RBI single to get Baylor on the board, and Jake Miller tripled and scored on a passed ball in the second. The Bears extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Cal Towey walked and scored on Joey Hainsfurther's safety squeeze bunt.

KU starter Frank Duncan (3-3) took the loss after he allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

Turley got into trouble in the second inning after giving up a two-out infield single and walking the next two batters to load the bases, but he struck out Tucker Tharp to end the inning. Kansas got two straight singles with one out in the fourth, but Turley induced a double-play grounder to end that threat, and he again got a double-play grounder to end the fifth. Four of the six hits allowed by Turley didn't leave the infield.

Baylor got strong relief work from Brad Kuntz and Austin Stone, who combined to allow only a pair of unearned runs on two hits with five strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Kuntz came on with two runners on and two outs in the sixth with Baylor leading 4-0, and he struck out Zac Elgie to end the threat.

"That was huge," Smith said. "He's (Kuntz) in a really good synch right now, which is why I didn't want to leave him out there after we got the big inning. We don't need to burn him up when we get a nine-run lead."

Baylor broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the seventh. With a 9-0 cushion, Smith turned the ball over to Austin Stone, who closed out the win with 2.0 innings of relief.

Logan Vick drew a bases-loaded walk for his third walk of the game, Cal Towey followed with a two-run single, Ludy added a RBI double and Vick scored on a wild pitch to cap the Bears' five-run seventh. Baylor added another run in the eighth when Langford tripled and scored on Nathan Orf's sacrifice fly.

The Bears and Jayhawks continue the series with games on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game has been pushed back an hour to 4:05 p.m. and Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Sunday will be the first of two Dogtopia Bark in the Park events at Baylor Ballpark this season.
